brand new banner HA

It's been a while in the making, but I've finally released the Unity implementation of my .NET library to interface with Newgrounds.io!

Github link

current version: 0.2.2

Like I've mentioned in previous newsposts (1) (2) the whole reasoning for this project in general was to have a generic C# library that can handle Newgrounds.io interactions, and this Unity package is now the first of its kind to be specific to a game engine while harnessing the architecture of the original library. Next up is Godot! Hopefully! I don't know Godot yet but I know it is possible!

I even made it so it can accept custom medal toast prefabs and the default one looks like the AS2 FF2025 medal clip that PsychoGoldfish made:

There's currently no project examples in the GitHub, but I think that the Quickstart and Basic Usage sections of the wiki are good ways to get started with the library.

I'm open to suggestions and feedback! So far I believe the library has 1:1 feature parity with the official Unity library, but with it being open source and me being open source(d to listen to feedback) I'm all ears!

...

I did say I'm all ears, right?

special thanks to Ralix, and PsychoGoldfish, really cool guys

iu_1371035_7383328.png

hey, do you like that banner? lol

anyway. like I was saying in my previous blogpost I was working on a Newgrounds.io library for .NET in general, not just unity right

well, today I managed to finish the absolute basics and release the source now! I even made a little test app to make sure it works in general and, lol

check the bluesky post, i made it a video.

some big things I have to work on next are to make a Unity WebGL compatible Communicator so this can be used for unity games, and learn godot so i can make a godot HTTPClient Communicator so I can also make godot users be able to use it, but anything else that can support c#'s Task-based async/await is now able to use this!

sorta. i haven't yet made the documentation yknow lol

but it's out there! and i've had a good chunk of fun working on it.

i will probably work on the unity communicator and some basic usage docs when i'm home from work tomorrow.

i will probably make a frontpage post when i'm done with that.... i have to work on other projects i have to frontpage later

these past few days I've been working on making a library for newgrounds.io for .NET in c#

iu_1365791_7383328.png

i got secure calls working and i have implemented my first important method outside of asking the server what time it is. i genuinely think that at this point i am unstoppable, so I figured i'd talk about my progress now (because i'm working on it on/off due to Job and other thingies)

though, one might be wondering why i'm doing this

question would probably be like "isn't there a c# library for newgrounds.io?"

the answer to that would be "yes and it's an official one made by Josh himself with contributions by Rallix"

so then that question becomes "why would you be doing this then?"

i do have a few motivators... but i wanna clear up first that i love josh's and rallix's work on the library because it's so intuitive to use (used it for the first time for CA-6 EX and getting everything up and running was a breeze for my purposes)

but really, the reason is because I wanted to give it a shot and I also wanted to try and make it fully runtime agnostic.

yes, it's c#, but it's Unity c#, so it assumes Unity

what I'm trying to do is something very flexible, so theoretically it could work in:

  • serverside
  • Unity
  • Godot .NET
  • KNI??? has anybody ever heard of KNI??? it's like MonoGame but KNI supports WebGL

i also want to try and make it entirely typesafe, and of course the main motivator is that i wanted to give a shot at it anyway lmao, newgrounds is cool

release? sometime, i need to make an actual thing with it after i implement everything, but i've been having fun with it so far

oh i also need to make it support unity lol, but i am confident that will be a breeze

toodles

p.d. why is "newgrounds-io-sucks" a tag LOL

Right, the scam that's been rife on Discord, Bluesky/X and countless other platforms has now reached me here. Unsure if it's reached anybody else so far but thought I'd highlight it here for knowledge's sake

This last user is "isabellario1123".

Along with the fact that they're a very new account, this word choice is very consistent with the use of LLMs. Things like "bringing ideas to life" and funny adjectives that you don't see that often when talking even in a professional request setting (remember all the word soup in the Wonka Experience?)

I took a glance at their artwork and I also noticed some Diffusion model style noise artifacts, but small, despite the artwork seemingly being touched up. It really needs to be seen close to find out about this.

Keep an eye out. I've been seeing some games being submitted to the Portal which clearly use genAI assets and now this happened.

the Best of January being released was the final pending topic for me to wrap up any more potential development on CA-6 EX. The game got all recognition I wanted and two metric tons more, I seriously don't know how to put into words all the appreciation I have for your comments and reviews, been really feeling super giddy about it

I think I'm ready to put a lid on it and fully focus on other things...

iu_1352628_7383328.png

I'm probably releasing this soon. Not frontpaging this announcement because I want to make accompanying art this weekend and so-so

I literally made a new OC for this project I'm going to focus on besides BBSprint that's how excited I am

Yeah, what the title says.

I took some feedback and implemented it because all the love you guys have given to the game has ABSOLUTELY made me feel much, much better about it.

The scope of the game remains reduced though, so it's unlikely I'll add any further goals to the game or other features besides QoL stuff.

  • Tutorial

I've noticed that not everyone has played Luigi's Picture Poker before so, uh, hindsight on my part!

I've added a tutorial screen with info on how to play. This should hopefully alleviate some particular issues.

iu_1350222_7383328.png

  • Bet MAX

big betters huh

I've changed the bet buttons to bet UP TO the amount specified, and a Bet MAX button that'll add to your bet as much as necessary to match your maximum bet.

Also moved the discard button. Should help with those reading from top to down.

I also added a warning when you're about one hour in to relogin with NG so you can keep earning medals without closing the browser. I REALLY hope we get the session refresh issue from NGIO fixed! This has been driving me crazy, and I have Zero Plans to add any sort of save system to this specific game.

Thanks for playing! Seriously, the reception has been just incredible for this wittle little game

might mess around and upload older artwork

it's not really up to par, but I'd like to have those up

since it doesn't represent my current skill i'll probably have some of them opted out of any awards

Artfight artwork in particular are things that I haven't taken the care to upload, so I will look into uploading these, especially now that art submisisons can have projects and I can upload the entire batch without flooding the Art Portal

I'm compiling a list of games in NG that are direct ports/enhancements of SM64DS/NSMB minigames, and they're not exactly too discoverable, so I'd like to ask help in filling out this collection! Send games you see comply with this description to fill this out with more than my own game and Wanted! which are very much fitting of the playlist's description

Of course, if you make your own revivals, do toot your own horn and shill yourself here AHAHAHAHA

If you need a list of the minigames present in NSMB/SM64DS, check this MarioWiki article list for NSMB or this one for SM64DS.

My silly little game got frontpaged... it's also my first frontpage ever! thank you so much! I am so very happy about it

iu_1340371_7383328.png

really, really, many thanks for the frontpage and your kind reviews! I used to have a sour-ish relationship with this game as mentioned in a previous blogpost, but the reception to it and this much recognition is all I've asked and two orders of magnitude more!

On to more pressing matters, I've been seeing some people have been having issues with the medals because the player session in NG keeps expiring! I looked into the NG.IO discord server and it seems this was a problem with the ping command that's making the game not remember the session. I have changed a little bit of the NGIO library for Unity to change the methood used for pinging to see if the problem gets fixed... I have no immediate way to test it, so let's hope it actually works!

@Axethrower this one's for you! I can't do much more from here onwards, if it keeps happening then it's definitely something on NG's end :(

Again, thank you all! See you soon and have a great day
